Hurricane Melissa made landfall on Tuesday in Jamaica as a catastrophic Category 5 storm, one of the strongest Atlantic hurricanes in history. Authorities urged people to seek shelter and stay indoors as a storm surge of up to 4 metres and wind speeds of 295 kph were expected across southern Jamaica.
